Misfits Market – Are They Worth It?

You know, I have contemplated the idea of a meal-prep or “ugly produce” box for a long time, but it never really seemed right. Either the price was prohibitive, or the meals just didn’t look right, or something else was completely off about it. Whatever the reason, I just could not find one that worked!

My friend and I had discussed Misfits Market, an “ugly organics” box that claimed to have an entire grocery store’s worth of organic food, all marked down up to 40%, that was perfectly fine — just not “supermarket shiny”. Well, I didn’t care what it looked like, as long as it tasted good! So we agreed to an experiment. My friend is also trying to make some changes in their life, so they agreed to foot the bill for the box, if I’d be the guinea pig and try it out.

Sure! I mean, what did I have to lose, right? So here’s the skinny, the 4-1-1 (most of you are too young to remember what that means), the dealio about Misfits Market. If, at the end, you’re interested in trying them, there will be a link provided where you can save $10 on your first box. Pretty great, right? Full disclosure, I also get 10 bucks off my next box. So it’s a win-win!

Misfits Market is a membership system, but they do not charge a membership fee. It is $0. For real. I was surprised, too, not gonna lie. There is no penalty for pausing, or even canceling, your membership at any time. And that’s a good thing because they send you fresh, organic produce every single week.

They will auto-fill your cart with about $30-33 worth of their weekly specialties. You can choose to add or remove, but remember — if it dips below $30, it won’t ship. Otherwise, if you do nothing, you’ll get that $30-33 worth of fresh, organic produce delivered to your door on the day of the week that you specify, every week.

Now here’s where it gets really cool. You have 2 days each week where you can “shop” their store. They have produce, they have dairy, they have meat and seafood, they have pantry staples and baking supplies and treats! And trust me– they’re not always the organic, healthy stuff (we got Pop Tarts in our box for a reason). You can make your box as big as you want! Ours was 25 lbs by the time we were all done. Mostly produce. Nothing processed (except the Pop Tarts — they were CHURRO flavored! What do you want from me? Baby steps.) My box totaled roughly $60, which included their flat-rate $5.50 shipping. I went to an Organic Foods store’s site locally, to price compare… The same stuff we got would have been about 2 times as much, even with the shipping!

I freaked out a little bit when it got here, because it’s just loose…. in the box…. all this produce just sitting there… and I have no idea how to store any of it. Fortunately, Misfits Market had me covered. They provide a handy dandy PDF for just that dilemma! And it really came in handy. So now I have a pantry and fridge PACKED with good produce and herbs. I am ready to learn how to cook them into yummy things that will please my palate!

Here are just a couple of photos of our haul. I would have gotten more, but I was pooped.

Now, if you’re interested in trying them out, go check out their site and read their FAQs. They are quite comprehensive!
